Word of the Year: 2022

Writer's picture: Alicia PazAlicia Paz

At the end of 2020, I attended a workshop for business owners while looking for virtual vision board workshops. We completed some journal prompts in this workshop, creating our word of the year. My word for 2021 was balance. I posted it next to me at my desk and made it my phone background. When I felt stuck, overwhelmed, or stressed out, I asked myself, 'Does this get me closer to balance?' In doing so, I quit Graduate School (my second round of graduate school) after crying at 10 pm struggling with Biostats. Instead, I focused on building close relationships, allowing space to grieve, and leaving my laptop at the office to sit on the couch with my partner every night to watch TV.

When thinking about my 2022 word, I considered many words; health, success, momentum, boundaries, and chose joy.

My intention with joy is to take balance to the next level and work on more than just surviving. I hope to travel in 2022, read for two hours a week, sleep, journal more and spend more time with friends and family. I am working on using the term with intention and remaining flexible in knowing plans don't always work out.
